In a new study conducted by InterVarsity, we’re now learning more than ever about Christian Evangelical college students, and most of the data is looking positive.
For instance, Christians in secular schools are finding themselves more and more accepted, with less than 5% of Christian College Students saying their college is not supportive of their faith. They’re also reporting that being involved in on-campus Christian ministries is making them feel closer to God, helping them appreciate their friends, and helping them develop positive leadership skills.
However, one of the most fascinating pieces of information is that the students were asked to rank the issues they’re most eager to listen and learn about through their college, for evangelical Christians, the #1 issue they were excited to learn about was race and racial issues.
In a culture that is growing more and more tense and divided, this data should provide some encouragement. I’ve seen and heard personally that many people make strong assumptions about Christians, that they’re stubborn, and not willing to listen on many social justice issues. Seeing the younger generation take a strong interest in this is encouraging not only for the future of Christianity, but for humanity.
We’re seeing a growing generation that is open about learning and loving others, and the research is supporting that. While the older generation is still less likely than the younger to identify race as an issue for our nation or world as a whole, moving forward, we’re likely to see more growth and interest in solving this issue.
The other issues that Christian College Students expressed the most interest in listening and learning about at “Climate Change” at #2, and Foster Care/Adoption at #3.
