Redemption United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City, OK is at the center of controversy after church members threatened to call police and kick out a hispanic woman who showed up with what they thought was marijuana.
In a video posted by TikTok user “alimamii23”, after church members asked her to leave, the woman is seen in the video explaining to them that it is cilantro for food that she brought for the church potluck.
In the video, the pastor himself walks up to her, saying that he stopped the sermon to talk to her:
However, this is not where the confrontation ends.
After deciding to leave, the woman asks for her food back, and the church members respond by threatening to call the police:
While many may use this video to show how bad Christians can be, I believe it’s important for us to see this as a teachable moment.
Sometimes Christians do horrible things, even on purpose. Christians are not immune from causing hurt and pain to others.
The difference is, we need to learn from our mistakes and continue to grow to be more Christ-like every day.
Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God.
1 John 4:7
The church featured in this video seems to have a journey ahead of them as they right this wrong. While we may never know the truth in this situation, there is a woman who feels hurt and betrayed by a community of Christians, and in those situations, we need to do what is best to help show Christ’s love.
